The Buffalo Nickel is one of the most iconic circulation coins from American history. First introduced in 1913, it quickly became a popular design in the modernization program from the United States Mint. Today, it lives on as the inspiration for countless commemorative bullion programs and silver rounds from private mints. The 2016 1 oz SilverTowne Silver Buffalo Round is currently available on Silver.com.

- Created originally by James Earle Fraser.
James Earle Fraser was commissioned by the Taft Administration in 1912 to redesign the nation’s five-cent piece, replacing the previous design which had been in use since the mid-1890s. Fraser, who grew up on the plains, used his background for inspiration in designing the new nickel.
Fraser choose a bison for the obverse face of the coin, and a Native American chieftain for the reverse of the original nickel. His new design was used from 1913 to 1938. Today, it appears on the Gold American Buffalo coin from the US Mint and, among other products, the 2016 SilverTowne Silver Buffalo Round.
On the reverse face of the coin is the right-profile portrait of a chieftain. Fraser’s original depiction was created by combining the physical features of three real-life Native American leaders.
The obverse face of the coin bears the image of a bison. Fraser’s inspiration was a bison named Black Diamond, who was a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 20th century.
Engravings changed little on both faces of the coin from the original nickel. “Liberty” and the year of issue appear on the reverse, while the obverse still bears “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum,” while the face value of (non-existent on a round) is replaced with the round’s weight, metal content, and purity.
SilverTowne Mint is a privately-owned facility in the state of Indiana. Originally founded in 1949, today it is one of the nation’s largest private facilities, dealing in gold, silver, and other precious metal coins and bars.
