The last time the monkey appeared on a Lunar Series coin was on the reverse side of the 2004 Year of the Monkey coin from the original Lunar Series. Launched in 2008, the Lunar Series II program is an all-new series of lunar coins with more intricate designs.
The Year of the Monkey falls in the 9th year of the 12-year cycle on the Zodiac. In ancient Chinese lore, each of the 12 animals earned their position on the Zodiac based upon their completion of the Great Race following a call to meeting from the Jade Emperor. The emperor rewarded each of the creatures that answered the call with a spot in the Zodiac, and based their position upon their arrival at the meeting.
Each of the 2016 10 oz Silver Australian Monkey Coins in this product listing is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU grade have no visible signs of wear and tear, though they may have contact marks, breaks in the luster, or spotted surfaces.
On the reverse side of each coin is the latest Year of the Monkey design. Featuring an adult monkey and a young monkey, the presence of a peach in the animal’s palm is reportedly indicative of longevity and immortality.
The obverse side bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 design of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s right-profile portrait is surrounded by engravings that include “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, year of issue, and face value.
