The Gold Chinese Panda coin program is one of the most storied bullion coins series available right now, and also the one coin program with the most transition taking place. Prior to 2016, the greatest changes to the Gold Chinese Panda came in the form of different panda designs on the obverse each year. For 2016, size and denomination changes have been made as the program shifts to gram measurements from the traditional Troy ounces. The 2016 100 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Panda is available now on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • The first ever 100 gram Chinese Proof Gold Panda!
  • Ships in a commemorative case with Certificate of Authenticity..
  • Consists of 100 Grams, or 3.215 Troy ounces, of .999 fine gold.
  • Face value of ¥1,500 (Yuan) is fully backed by the People’s Republic of China.
  • Features a new panda design on the obverse. Temple of Heaven on the reverse.

For 2016, the Chinese Mint opted to switch away from Troy ounces as the standard measurement of weight and metal content in its bullion and proof coins. In an effort to better align with the nation’s metric system, all coins in the program now feature weights and metal content in grams instead.

This shift meant that changes needed to be made to many of the offerings in the series. The 2016 100 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Panda represents a new size in the series, as well as a new denomination in Yuan for the program. The changeover from Troy ounces to grams affected both the silver and gold versions of the coin.

On the obverse is the latest panda design used in the program’s history. This year’s version depicts a panda as it crawls along a tree branch. The Chinese Mint has used a different design every year since 1982, with the exception of 2002 when the design from 2001 was reused.

The reverse side of the coin features a depiction of the outer façade of the Temple of Heaven. Engravings on this face include the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin Chinese, and the coin’s year of issue.
