One of the world’s longest running gold coin series is back in 2016, and there are some significant changes to the coins this year. With new weights and even some new denominations available, the Gold Chinese Panda coin is poised to stand out in the crowd this year. Right now you can purchase a 2016 150 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Panda coin from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • The first ever 150 gram Proof Chinese Gold Panda!
  • Arrives in a commemorative case including Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Consists of 150 Grams, or 4.82 Troy ounces, of .999 fine gold.
  • Bears a face value of ¥2,000 (Yuan) backed by the government of China.
  • Features the newest panda design in the series.
  • Temple of Heaven again graces the reverse.

There were a number of changes to various coins in the Gold Chinese Panda coin series this year, but none was greater than the shift away from Troy ounces in the weight of each product. Coins are now weighed, struck, and marked in Grams to accurately mirror the country’s metric system.

The 2016 150 Gram Proof Gold Chinese Panda coin is a perfect example of this change. A gold coin in the series with this face value has existed since 2007, but was previously weighted at 5 Troy ounces, for a total of 155.5 Grams.

On the obverse you’ll find the image of an adult panda as it playfully climbs along a tree branch that juts out over a small pond. Engravings on the coin include the face value, Chinese symbol for Panda, and the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity. A staple of the panda design for years now, the bamboo wall, is again featured in the background.

The reverse bears the Temple of Heaven. Featured on the coin since its introduction in 1982, the Temple of Heaven has stood in central Beijing since the 1500s, and has served as a gathering place for imperial leaders, cultural groups, and religious orders.

The Chinese Mint strikes all gold and silver bullion and commemorative coins for the People’s Republic of China, as well as the nation’s circulation coins and banknotes. Its operations are overseen by the People’s Bank of China.
