The New Zealand Mint has been producing Lunar Series coins since 2012. While the primary focus of production is on bullion and proof versions of the coin, that same year the mint began introducing an entirely unique product for collectors.
The 2016 5 oz Silver New Zealand Mother of Pearl Monkey coin combines the beauty of mother of pearl in a coin with a design that focuses on the latest animal represented in the Chinese lunar calendar.
On the obverse side of the coin is the common image used on all New Zealand Mint products, that of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured in right-profile relief and created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, Her Majesty’s effigy is surrounded by engravings that include her name, the nation of issue, and the year of issue.
The reverse features a brilliant mother of pearl finish at the core of the coin, giving the Year of the Monkey design a striking finish. The image created for the Year of the Monkey includes a family of three monkeys, with a mom, dad, and young monkey featured in the design. Engravings read “Year of the Monkey” and “25 Dollars.”
The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned entity operating in the capital of Auckland. The mint is not affiliated with the central government, which receives all of its coinage and currency from the Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Mint.
