On the obverse of each 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle certified coin is the image of Walking Liberty, which was originally created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. Liberty is depicted walking toward the setting sun as a symbol of the nation’s drive toward a brighter future.
The reverse side of all Proof Silver American Eagle coins has the heraldic eagle of the United States. In use on American coinage since 1794, it has been modified many times since then, with this particular version a 1986 refinement from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti.
Each 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle coin available on Silver.com in this listing is in near-perfect condition according to the PCGS. Coins with this grade feature full, original mint luster, but also exhibit minor flaws. A maximum of two minor flaws are possible, ranging from minuscule hairlines to contact marks, and are located exclusively outside the primary focal area.
As a Deep-cameo coin, these Proof Silver Eagles feature a strong, frosted matte finish on the design set, which overlays a background field that is deeply-mirrored, and clear. The combined effects make the design appear to float over the coin’s surface.
For the first time in US Mint history, a silver coin is struck with edge lettering. The 2016 Proof Silver Eagle marks the 30th anniversary of the program, and has commemorative edge lettering to denote the special occasion.
Proof Silver American Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility. While bullion coins are struck there and on a supplemental basis at the San Francisco Mint, proof coins are only produced at West Point and feature a “W” mint mark.
