The reverse of each 2017 Silver American Eagle Coin shows the heraldic eagle of the United States. The image was created in 1986, by then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti. Mercanti held the position from 1986 to 2010 when he retired.
On the obverse of each 2017 Silver American Eagle Coin is the Walking Liberty image. This image was designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. The image is considered one of the finest in American coinage history. Originally, the design appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Coin from 1916 to 1947.
All of these coins were made by the United States Mint. While the West Point Mint is primarily responsible for the production of the bullion Silver American Eagles, San Francisco’s facility is sometimes used to keep up with demand.
