Starting on August 21, 2017 the moon will pass between the Sun and Earth in a total solar eclipse which will completely block the daylight rays of the Sun from reaching planet Earth as it passes through. Known as the Great American Total Solar Eclipse, it will be visible across a wide band of the lower 48 states of the US and is expected to last 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
This eclipse marks the first time since 1776 that a total solar eclipse travels exclusively over land within the area of the lower 48 states. For the Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation, this eclipse is a sacred event and will be 98% visible from the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota.
Coins from the Native American Mint have a face value listed at 1 Dollar, and are supported by the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe in this particular case. However, the coins hold no legal tender face value within the United States as only those coins struck by the United States Mint have that designation.
On the obverse of all 2017 1 oz Silver Solar Eclipse Curved Coins you’ll find a convex surface that bulges outward to mimic the round shape of the moon and Sun. It features a colorized design reflecting the visuals of an eclipse as the moon passes in front of the Sun in this design.
The reverse of the Silver Solar Eclipse Curved coin includes another colorized proof design. This time you’ll see the colorized images of the North and South American continents, with a moon travel path that mimics the route the total solar eclipse will take as it passes over the lower 48 states of the US.
