What are Comex Silver Stocks?
Commodity exchange, or Comex, has been seeing some favorable predictions for silver as of late. Upward trends from 2008 and 2009 have continued into 2010, mostly due to huge discrepancies between silver supply and demand.
Silver Stockpiles: Then and Now
In 1950, silver companies maintained stockpiles of the precious metal in the 10 billion ounce range. Dipping down to three billion a few years ago, the silver bullion stockpile has plummeted to a mere 140 million ounces. Such an amount is estimated to be a four-month supply, 98.6% less than what was stockpiled 60 years ago. Since the sources in Nevada, Canada, Mexico, and Peru are showing less and less output each year, it is unlikely that silver stockpiling will come close to the 1950’s levels ever again.
In 2009, because of this decline, the price of silver rose by 60%. Comex silver stocks directly reap this benefit, as they are backed by real silver held by the shareholder. Since the beginning of 2009, silver ETF funds have gone up 50%.
