Silver Dollars

U.S. Mint Silver Dollars

The United States Mint has a long history of minting silver dollar coins, dating back to the Coinage Act of 1792, which established silver as the metal of choice for striking dollar coins. While several different types of silver dollars have been minted throughout the years, the most widely-recognized are the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar.

Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar coin was first minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. It has a face value of $1 U.S. dollar, weighs 26.73 grams, and has a diameter of 38.1 mm. The Morgan was struck from a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper, giving these coins a net silver weight of .77344 oz. of pure silver. The Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Denver mints.

Minted from the largest silver discovery in the history of the United States, the Comstock Lode in northern Nevada in the mid-1870s, the Morgan Silver Dollar has become one of the most treasured collectible coins for their link to this significant period in American history.

Peace Silver Dollar

The Peace Silver Dollar coin was first minted from 1921 to 1928, and again from 1934 to 1935. It has a face value of $1 U.S. dollar, weighs 26.73 grams, and has a diameter of 38.1 mm. The Peace Dollar was struck from a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper, giving these coins a net silver weight of .77344 oz. of pure silver. The Peace Silver Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver mints.

Minted as a commemorative peace coin to mark the end of World War I, the Peace Silver Dollar is considered by many coin collectors to be the last true silver dollar produced by the U.S. Mint for general circulation.

Silver Dollar Bags

Both the Morgan and Peace silver dollar coins can be purchased in bags at varying face values. Buying silver in this manner offers several advantages. In addition to the high numismatic value of these historical coins, each bag contains a significant amount of silver.
