The Buffalo Nickel was designed in 1913 by Fraser as a replacement for the Liberty Head nickel design. The Liberty Head nickel design had been in use since 1883, and Fraser’s design was part of a larger move by the US government to beautify its circulation coins. The move started in 1905 under President Theodore Roosevelt, who propelled the drive to revive American gold coins.
Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design was among the first to propel the revival of silver coins in the US. In this case, it was the administration of President William Howard Taft pushing for silver coins to be redesigned. Fraser was a native of Winona, Minnesota, and a gifted sculptor whose public monuments include the William Howard Taft Monument at Arlington National Cemetary.
On the obverse side of these 1/10 oz Great American Mint Silver Buffalo Rounds is Fraser’s famous Indian Head design. Featured is the depiction of a Native American chieftain in right-profile relief, with the engraving of “Liberty.”
The reverse side of each round includes the image of a bison atop a small dirt mound. This image was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison living at the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early 20th century.
Great American Mint is located in Anaheim, California. The company is a full-service refinery with silver production certifications, including refining, bullion blank production, and a first-class analytics laboratory.
