As the United States sat out the early years of World War II, Australia stood alone in the Pacific as a counter to the growing territorial holdings of Imperial Japan. The Imperial Japanese forces had expanded off the main Japanese islands to mainland Asia in both modern-day China and the Korean peninsula, as well as nabbing islands from Guam in the central Pacific to Midway and Saipan as well.
