Proof Gold American Eagles were released over a three-year period beginning with the 1986 debut of the program. While all four weights were initially available in 1986 for the bullion version, only the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle was issued that year. 1987 saw the introduction of the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle. In 1988, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagles joined the collection.
On the obverse of 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle is the image of Lady Liberty that Augustus Saint-Gaudens created in 1907 at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt. The reverse side of 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles includes the image of a male eagle flying a nest where a female eagle guards a young hatchling.

All coins from 1994 onward were produced by the West Point Mint with “W” mint marks.
