James Earle Fraser designed the Indian Head Nickel in 1913 for the United States Mint using real-world people and object as inspiration. On one side of the coin is the image of an American Bison. A resident bison at New York City’s Central Park Zoo named Black Diamond was the source of his buffalo design.
On the opposite side of the famous coin, Fraser combined the facial structure and features of three real-life tribal chieftains to create his famous Native American portrait. According to Fraser, Iron Tail of the Sioux tribe, Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Two Moons of the Cheyenne served as the inspiration for his Native American Indian design.
The obverse side of the ½ oz Great American Mint Silver Buffalo Round features the composite image of a Native American chieftain. Similar to Fraser’s original design, only the word “Liberty” is engraved on this side in front of the right-profile portrait. Some rounds may have a date mark on this side.
On the reverse side of the round you’ll see the image of Black Diamond standing on a patch of dirt and grass. Again, some of the engravings mirror the design of the original Indian Head Nickel. “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum” are featured above, but the round’s weight, purity, and metal content are engraved below instead of a face value.
The Great American Mint produces a number of popular silver rounds and bars for investors and collectors, as well as high quality blanks used by mints such as the Royal Canadian Mint and United States Mint.
