Gold Australian Kangaroo coins originated from the Perth Mint in 1986 as the Gold Nugget series. The coins initially featured a nugget of gold as a promotional bullion product highlighting the nation’s vast gold reserves in the western reaches of the continent. As of 1990 though, the coins in this range have featured the kangaroo and are available under the new label of Gold Australian Kangaroo.
On the obverse of the ½ oz Gold Australian Kangaroo coin is one of two possible right-profile portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s third-generation portrait is found on coins in this series struck from 1990-1997. This image was created by Raphael Maklouf and is viewed as a regal, ageless depiction of the Queen.
Coins in this series struck from 1998-present feature the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty. This design still captures Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief, but was created by Ian Rank-Broadley and is viewed by many as a more realistic interpretation of the monarch.
The reverse of all ½ oz Gold Australian Kangaroo Coins features the image of the world’s largest marsupial. The kangaroo is very unique in that it has large, powerful legs and a muscular tail that help it with its movement. The kangaroo cannot, however, as a result move backward with any great ease. The kangaroo is featured in a new design on the reverse of these coins each year.
Perth Mint was opened in 1899 as the third and final Royal Mint facility in Australia under British colonial rule. Today it is owned by the government of Western Australia and operates independently over the sovereign Royal Australian Mint.
