The Royal Australian Mint offers its own lunar-themed coins, much like other major mints. Known as the Lunar New Year Series, the Royal Australian Mint offers a new design on the reverse to represent each of the 12 animals of the Zodiac with the respective date matching that animal’s appearance in the Zodiac. As the 12-year cycle restarts, the mint offers new images of the individual animals each time through.
The obverse side of 1/2 oz Gold Royal Australian Mint Lunar Coins includes a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. One of two possible designs will feature on these coins. Most of the coins available have the 1998 Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Coins issued from 2020 onward have the 2015 Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
On the reverse face of the 1/2 oz Gold RAM Lunar Coins is a depiction of one of the 12 animals from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Each animal appears with its respective date mark. For example, 2014 coins feature the image of a horse for the Year of the Horse.
