The American Eagle coin series from the United States Mint is its most popular product lineup, bar none. While the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle garner most of the headlines and attract the attention of numismatists everywhere, the Platinum American Eagle is the nation’s official platinum bullion coin and has been part of the series since 1997. Today, the 1/2 oz Platinum American Eagle coin is available from varied years in BU condition on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in a plastic flip to protect the coin’s condition.
  • Popular Platinum American Eagle bullion coin!
  • Available from varied years of production!
  • Consists of One-Half Troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum.
  • Face value of $50 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Obverse features the Portraits of Liberty design.
  • Reverse includes the “Eagle Soaring Above America” image.
  • Available in BU condition.

Platinum American Eagle coins are most closely associated to the structure of the Gold American Eagle program. Available in both bullion and proof, the Platinum American Eagle features four different weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. However, unlike either the Silver or Gold Eagles, the Platinum American Eagle has something that makes it distinct.

The Platinum American Eagle coin is the only bullion coin from the United States Mint that features a new design on the reverse face each year. This is confined to the proof version only, with the obverse and reverse of the bullion version featuring the same design every year.

On the obverse of these 1/2 oz Platinum American Eagle coins you’ll find the vision of the Statue of Liberty’s head as she fixes her gaze on the distant future. This design came from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint John Mercanti, and has featured on the obverse since 1997.

The reverse of the bullion 1/2 oz Platinum American Eagle coin features the so-called “Eagle Soaring Above America” design. This came from Thomas D. Rogers in 1997, and features on the reverse every year. It depicts a bald eagle flying over the sun with its wings spread wide.

Each of the 1/2 oz Platinum American Eagle coins in this Silver.com listing is a BU coin. Specimens with a Brilliant Uncirculated grade exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from production.

Additionally, the Platinum Eagles in this listing are available with various years of issue. The specific date mark you receive is determined by the availability of different years at the time your order is fulfilled.
