One of the final silver coins to be redesigned in the early 20th century as the US government looked to beautify its coinage was the 50-cent piece. From 1892 to 1911, America’s dimes, quarter dollars, and half dollars shared similar designs from US Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber. The so-called Barber coinage underwent redesigns from new artists and sculptors.
Adolph A. Weinman, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens who revived America’s gold coin design, developed the Walking Liberty design for silver coins. It was created in 1916, and featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from then until 1947.
On the obverse of these ¼ oz Great American Mint Silver Walking Liberty Rounds features Weinman’s Walking Liberty. In the design, she’s featured walking toward the setting sun as a sign of the nation’s persistent march toward a brighter future. Engravings on this side include “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the “GA” Great American Mint’s official mark.
The reverse features the design found on American Silver Eagle coins, which feature Weinman’s Walking Liberty on the obverse. Engravings on this side include “Great American Mint,” 13 stars above the heraldic eagle image, and the round’s weight, purity, and metal content.
Great American Mint produces high quality silver rounds, innovative silver bars, and investment-grade silver blanks used by the Royal Canadian Mint, United States Mint, Royal Mint, and the Singapore Mint, among others.
