When the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Platinum Maple Leaf, it was originally offered in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. The mint continued issuing the coin in these four weights until 2002 at which point the program was suspended. In 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint revived the Platinum maple leaf series but only offered the coins in a 1 oz weight.

On the obverse side of the Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy appears on this face of the coin in two different designs. The coins issued in 1988 and 1989 have Arnold Machin’s second generation portrait of the queen at the age of 39. The remaining coins issued from 1990 to 2002 have Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s third generation effigy of the Queen at the age of 64.
The reverse face of 1/4 oz Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf coins includes the design of the sugar maple leaf. The sugar maple is the official emblem of Canada and has featured on Canadian Maple Leaf coins since 1979. This design was created by Walter Ott and features on the reverse side of all coins in the series.
