As one iconic brand departed the precious metals industry in 2015, a new player entered to take its place. After 160 years of refining silver and gold, Johnson Matthey sold its assets to Asahi Holdings of Japan. The newly-formed Asahi Refining wasted little time in producing silver bars with its brand logo, and now the 1 Kilo Silver Asahi Bar is available on Silver.com.

Bar Highlights:

  • Newest product from Asahi Refining!
  • Consists of 1 Kilogram, or 32.15 troy ounces, of .999 fine silver.
  • Features the Asahi Refining logo.
  • Struck at the Salt Lake City facility.

Asahi Refining was formed following the purchase of Johnson Matthey’s facilities in North America. The $186 million acquisition gave Asahi Refining a strong foothold in the precious metals industry and the ability to jump right into production.

While 100 oz bars from Asahi Refining were available swiftly following the acquisition, it took longer to start producing other bars, such as these 1 Kilo Silver Asahi Bars. The surging demand for silver last year created shortages that impacted all mints, and made it difficult for Asahi Refining to ramp up production.

On the obverse of these new 1 Kilo Silver Asahi Bars you’ll find the Asahi Refining logo at the top. An oval shape, it features the words “Asahi – SLC” around the outer rim, while “Assayers – Refiners” is engraved in the middle. The bar’s weight, purity, and metal content are also engraved on this face, along with an individual serial number.

Each of the 1 Kilo Silver Asahi Bars in this product listing from Silver.com originated at the Salt Lake City facility in Utah, in the United States. Asahi Refining took control of three former-Johnson Matthey facilities. In addition to the Salt Lake City refinery, Asahi took over an addition refinery in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and an investment casting services facility in St. Catharines.

Asahi Holdings was formed in 1952 in Tokyo, Japan. The company’s original operations focused on the collection, recycling, and refining of precious and rare metals from waste materials in Japan.
