When the Silver Chinese Pandas originally debuted at the Chinese Mint in 1983 it was only available as a proof silver coin. The coins were originally produced as 27 gram specimens with .900 fine silver content. There was no issue of the coins in 1986, and when it returned in 1987, the coins were still only available in proof quality. However, this release finally established a 1 Troy ounce coin. This 1 Troy ounce coin had .925 silver, or sterling silver, content.

On the obverse side of the 1 Kilo Proof Silver Chinese Pandas is an image of the Giant Panda bear species. The Giant Panda is a distinctive species that has varying patches of black fur and white fur. Despite its massive size, the Giant Panda lives almost entirely on bamboo as it accounts for up to 95% of its daily dietary intake. The image of the Giant Panda is different for each date mark with only the 2001 and 2002 coins sharing a design.
The reverse face of 1 Kilo Proof Silver Chinese Panda bears a depiction of the building known as the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This structure was built between 1406 and 1420 when the broader Temple of Heaven Complex was constructed.
