During the American Revolution, the spirit of defiance, resilience, and readiness that still defines the nation to this day was born. As the first regiment of Continental Marines was mustered to join the newly-formed Continental Navy on its first-ever mission, the image of a coiled rattlesnake ready to strike was born in a simple painting on the drums of the Marines. With news in 1775 that a Royal Navy fleet was sailing for America with supplies for the British Royal Army, George Washington and the Second Continental Congress authorized the creation of the Continental Navy to attempt to intercept the cargo to supply the raw forces of the Continental Army. To support the Continental Navy, Congress also authorized mustering up five companies of Continental Marines. When these Marines enlisted and arrived in Philadelphia, they marched in with yellow drums emblazoned with a coiled rattlesnake that would go on to be known as the Gadsden snake on the Gadsden Flag.
