The United States Mint struck $1 gold coins between 1849 and 1889, classifying each as Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. Coins from these various production years featured different reverse designs, as well as sizes. These Type 1 coins were struck between 1849 and 1854. Gold coin production was spurred by the discovery of gold in California in 1848, flooding the Treasury with immense gold reserves.
On the reverse side of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty. Featured in left-profile relief, she is visible with a crown on her head and 13 stars around her, representing the original colonies. The obverse is graced by a wreath encircling the face value of the coin and its year of minting. The engraving “United States of America” is also featured on the obverse. James B. Longacre was the man behind the design on both sides of the coin.
Each coin in this product listing is available in Very Fine condition. Coins in VF show little to no wear on the major features of the coin, with sharp details still evident. Minor features, such as engravings, will show some wear. Any wear on the coin is likely to be found on the high points of the coin’s design.
Pre-33 $1 Gold Liberty Coins were struck by the United States Mint at its Philadelphia Mint facility, with branch locations in San Francisco, New Orleans, Dahlonega, and Charlotte contributing to production on occasion.
