Customers; Coins will be from years of our choice, all of which will range from 1849 to 1854.

One of the rarest group of coins in the world are those $1 gold US coins that were produced before 1933. Coins from this category that are still available today survived a massive government collection of gold coins during the Great Depression, all of which were melted into gold bars. Today, you can purchase a Pre-33 $1 Gold Liberty Coin from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Consists of .048375 ounces of .900 gold.
  • Issued a $1 (USD) value by the United States Mint.
  • Available in Extra Fine (XF) condition.
  • Categorized as Type 1.
  • Ships in individual plastic flip cases.

The United States Mint produced $1 gold coins between 1849 and 1889 in three different types. Struck at a total of 7 different mints, with the Philadelphia Mint bearing the brunt of production, the coins were a result of the massive influx of gold to Treasury Department coffers following the discovery of gold in California in 1849.

On the reverse side of all Type 1 coins is the image of Lady Liberty, featured in left-profile portrait. Surrounding the image of Liberty are 13 stars, representing America’s original colonies. The obverse side of the coin bears the face value, year of minting, and the engraving “United States of America.” The year of minting and face value are surrounded by a wreath in the image. James B. Longacre created both designs on the coin.

The products available in this Silver.com listing are considered XF, which means the coin shows very little wear. Many of the major design features are clearly refined and much of the coin’s luster is still visible. As a Type 1 coin, these Pre-33 $1 Gold Coins were struck specifically between 1849 and 1854. In 1854, Type 2 coins went into production and the Liberty design feature was discontinued.
