Issued in 2016, the Hobo Nickel Series features individual silver round specimens with new designs that riff on the original Buffalo Nickel coin in circulation in the US from 1913 to 1938. Each individual 1 oz Antique Mr. Jowls and His Pet Buffalo Round in this series includes a unique serial number engraved onto the edge of the round. The rounds ship to you with air-tite protective plastic capsules and include a numbered Certificate of Authenticity from the min. Further, these silver rounds have an antique polish.
The hand-scraped antique polish gives the rounds an heirloom quality appearance. The design in this tenth release comes from Bill Jameson, one of the five different artists working on the designs in the second installment of five artworks for the Hobo Nickel Series.
All Hobo Nickel silver rounds offer a twist on the original design of the Buffalo Nickel. Designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913 for the United States Mint, his design of a Native American leader on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse was a popular circulation coin design. The Buffalo Nickel’s size and low denomination made it a common target of hobo artists etching their own twists onto Fraser’s design.
The obverse of 1 oz Mr. Jowls and His Pet Buffalo Rounds includes the left-profile portrait of Mr. Jowls. Similar in appearance to Fraser’s Native American, this figure wears a bowler cap, has big jowls, and has heavy stubble on his face.
On the reverse of 1 oz Antique Silver Mr. Jowls and His Pet Buffalo Rounds is the image of an American bison. This buffalo is very close in appearance to the buffalo on Buffalo Nickels, but this beast has the face of a man and wears a bowler cap like Mr. Jowls on the obverse side of the round.
