Record demand for silver in recent years hasn’t just led to an immense spike in the price and demand for anything silver bullion, it has also blocked some companies from establishing a larger footprint in the industry. Asahi Refining’s purchase of Johnson Matthey was smooth, but getting new products out the door proved tricky. The 1 oz Silver Asahi Refining Bar is now available for purchase on

Bar Highlights:

  • The first 1,000 bars ever struck! Serials #1-1,000! Please note we cannot take requests for specific serial numbers.
  • Ships in sealed plastic to protect the bar’s condition.
  • Consists of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

Asahi Refining wanted to get its own branded silver and gold bars on the market as soon as possible after its purchase of Johnson Matthey. Unfortunately, the sky-high prices and immense demand for silver led to a delay in obtaining silver to produce its bars with. After releasing 100 oz and 1 Kilogram weights, Asahi was forced to wait before striking the popular 1 oz and 10 oz weights.

Each of the 1 oz Silver Asahi Refining Bars in this product listing on comes from the release of the first 1,000 bars from Asahi. The company owns two former Johnson Matthey facilities; one in Salt Lake City, Utah and another in Brampton, Ontario.

The obverse side has a blank finish with no engravings, and its only identifying features are the rough, matte finish on the product. Reverse designs include only the Asahi Refining logo, the bar’s purity, and an individual serial number. These are arranged vertically from top to bottom, with the serial numbers at the bottom of the bar’s reverse.

Asahi Ltd. started as a precious metal scrapper and recycling operation in Tokyo, Japan in the 1950s.. With its $162 million (USD) purchase of Johnson Matthey facilities in December 2014, the company established a global footprint in the highly active precious metals industry. As a result, Asahi now owns three facilities in total, with a support facility in St. Catharines, Canada in addition to the two refining facilities.
