The obverse of the Burnished Gold Eagle features the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of a full-length Lady Liberty. He initially created this design in the early 1900’s for the Double Eagle ($20) coins that were minted through 1933. The Gold Eagle’s Lady Liberty is a version of that original design. She is headed straight towards you, with her outstretched right hand carrying a torch and her left hand holding an olive branch. Lady Liberty’s hair is flowing in the breeze behind her. Near the bottom edge of the coin, to the left of her right foot, is a depiction of the Capitol building.
The reverse of the Burnished Gold Eagle features the Miley Busiek design of an eagle family that was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. Flying overhead is a male eagle, clutching an olive branch, as he heads towards the family nest. It is meant to symbolize the importance of family in America. Several inscriptions are included on the reverse.
