The US Coast Guard was first formed in 1790 as the Revenue Marine, but was known throughout a majority of the 18th century as the US Revenue Cutter Service. The US Coast Guard originally performed military duties fighting Barbary Pirates overseas between the disbanding of the Continental Navy and founding of the US Navy.
What makes the service unique is its dual role. While it can be transferred to the US Navy within the Department of Defense during times of war, it now operates under the US Department of Homeland security for its maritime law enforcement missions. Were the US Coast Guard a separate navy unto itself, it would be the 12th largest naval force in the world.
On the obverse of all 1 oz Silver Coast Guard Button Domed Rounds is the image of an open-winged eagle as it sits perched atop an upright anchor. Leaved branches curve up from below the design, while the entire outer perimeter of the design field is encircled by rope.
The reverse of the Silver Coast Guard Button Domed Round includes the Great Seal of the United States. This commonly used insignia includes the image of a bald eagle grasping the national shield, while also holding in its talons the arrows of war and olive branch of peace.
The United States Armed Forces Collection of 1 oz silver rounds was created by Anonymous Mint, a private American minting and coin design operation. Osborne Mint, the oldest operating private mint in America, is the coining partner in this series.
