The legend of the Jersey Devil dates back to 1735. The original name many used for the cryptid creature was the Leeds’ Devil. It is rumored that Jane Leads, a resident of Pine Barrens in South Jersey, cursed the difficult pregnancy she was enduring with her 13th child. After giving birth to a normal child, her horrifying decision to curse her own child came to fruition. The child was soon transformed into a beast with a horse’s body, goat’s head, and the wings of a bat. Worst of all was the ear-splitting cry of the creatures.
The obverse of Copper Cryptid Creatures The Jersey Devil Rounds features a depiction of the Jersey Devil. The creature is shown in right-profile relief with a horse-like body as it stands up on its hind legs. The goat-like head is evident in the design and the beast is flexing its bat wings behind its figure. The house in the background features 13 notches, representing the number in the birth order of Mrs. Leeds’ final child.
On the reverse side of 1 oz Copper The Jersey Devil Rounds is a common image that will be used through the Cryptid Creatures Series. This image shows a version of the US national shield, eagle’s wings, and the US national flag. All of these symbols have been aged and worn to reflect a spooky theme.
