Hanukkah is an annual Jewish festival that marks the recovery of the city of Jerusalem by the Israelites and the rededication of the Second Temple. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, is celebrated over the course of eight days and nights. The festival always starts on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, which translates to varying different dates each year on the Gregorian calendar used by Western Christianity. Generally speaking, the eight days and nights fall between late November and late December each year. In 2021, the celebration takes place from November 28, 2021, to December 6, 2021.
On the obverse of Copper Hanukkah Rounds, you will find a depiction of a menorah. The menorah is central to the theme of the Festival of Lights. There are eight main candles on the menorah, one for each of the nights of the festival. The central candle, known as the shamash, is used to light the other candles throughout the festival period. One candle is lit on the first night, two on the second, and so forth until the eighth night. On that final night, all of the candles are lit on the menorah. This design includes a seasonal greeting and a Star of David on the menorah.
The reverse side of 1 oz Copper Hanukkah Rounds comes with a common design element used across all seasonal Osborne Mint copper rounds. The simple design offers a field of snowflakes in which each falling snowflake is different from the next.
