Over its 30+ year production run, the coin has seen several design changes and its purity has even been raised. Originally the coin was minted with .999 pure gold, but in November of 1982 the mint decided to raise the purity to an unheard of .9999 (99.99% pure gold). Ever since this change, the coin has remained at this finer purity which makes it one of the most pure gold bullion coins available to the investing public.
The obverse of the Gold Maple Leaf coin shows a profile image of the Queen. Her hair is finely detailed while she is showing off her elegant necklace. Above her head are the inscriptions for her name “Elizabeth II.” Below the Queen is the coins face value which reads “50 Dollars.” The coin’s year of minting is also featured next to the legal tender value.
The reverse of the coin, and where it derives its name from, shows a maple leaf at its center. Much attention has been paid to the design of the leaf, and one can make out each vein in fine detail. Listed above the leaf is an inscription for the country which shows “Canada.” To the right and left are purity markings which show “9999.” Below are the inscriptions for metal composition and weight.
