The Morgan Silver Dollar was produced by the United States Mint from 1878 to 1904 and for one more year in 1921. They were the first silver dollars to be minted subsequent to the Coinage Act of 1873 when the value of silver dropped due to the new gold standard. In honor of that Silver Morgan Dollar, the Highland Mint has released a special commemorative Morgan Silver Round.
In contrast to the actual coin’s 90% silver purity, this 1 ounce round contains an impressive 99.9% silver purity. Each of these silver rounds is guaranteed to arrive in brand new condition. Please note that while this round is based on a real piece of currency, it is not legally tender nor does it possess an actual face value.
The Highland Mint has taken great care to replicate Morgan’s coin design. On the front of the dollar is Lady Liberty. For Morgan’s depiction of her, he departed from the classical renditions and chose to portray a more realistic woman with loose curls and less idealized features. He does, however, keep her traditional pileus, laurel leaves and inscribed headband. Encircling Liberty are the words “E Pluribus Unum” and a series of sixteen stars instead of Morgan’s original thirteen to compensate for the absence of a mintage date.
The central figure of the reverse side is the bald eagle, which Morgan had studied in the wild prior to creating the illustration. The bird is rendered with its wings fully stretched and its talons holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. It is partially surrounded by an open wreath. On the round, the “In God We trust” motto above the eagle has been replaced by its silver purity. Lastly, our nation’s name and the coin’s denomination are inscribed along the outer edge of the coin.
The Highland Mint’s Morgan Silver Round provides a stunning artistic rendering of the original piece and is certain to become a cherished collectible.
