Fortuna governed the circle of the four stages of life, known as the Wheel of Fortune, in Roman culture. Her depiction was used in many areas of Roman life, from her role as the goddess of Fortune to her personification of luck (both bad and good) in Roman religion. She was also viewed as a personification of virtue in chance events. It was said that those who lacked virtues invited ill-fortune upon themselves. She was often represented in Roman culture using the symbols of a globe, cornucopia, wheel, and wreath.
Three of those four symbols are visible in the depiction of Fortuna featured on the obverse side of this 1 oz. gold bar. Behind Fortuna’s left-profile image is a wheel. A wreath rests atop her head, just above the blindfold that covers her eyes. A large cornucopia winds down from her head to her clasped hands at the bottom of the image, where a bounty of riches flows forth into her hands.
On the reverse side of the bar is the PAMP Suisse corporate logo, as well as the bar’s weight, metal content, and purity. Additional inscriptions include the assayer’s mark and individual serial number, both serving as signs of the identity and quality of the bar.
PAMP Suisse was founded in Ticino, Switzerland in 1977. An independent entity, PAMP is now part of the larger MKS Group. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, MKS is a global corporation with interests in precious metals and financial services.
