The Platinum Eagles from the United States Mint represent the only platinum bullion coin offered by the United States. This coin series was introduced in 1997 with bullion and proof specimens boasting 1 oz platinum coins alongside three fractional-ounce weights: 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. As of 2008, the fractional-ounce coins are no longer available and the longest-running coin is the coveted 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagle. Platinum Eagles were initially available from 1997 to 2008 with the aforementioned four weights available in both bullion and proof versions. In 2008, all bullion coins were suspended for several years and the fractional-ounce coins were suspended for good in the proof collection. While the bullion coins eventually returned in 2014, only the 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle continued in production through the 2009-2013 lull in bullion coinage.
All of the 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles in this listing come with a plastic slab and a perfect certification. A PF70 grade is reserved for proof coins with full, original mint luster and a lack of detracting flaws on the design elements and surface areas. Included with these coins is an ultra-cameo label. UCAM specimens are those with strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear fields.
This Silver.com listing is a random year option. This means that we select coins from our available inventory once your payment has been processed. We are unable to guarantee a particular date mark or corresponding design for you. If you buy more than one, please keep in mind that you may get coins with the same date marks and designs.
The obverse and reverse designs vary from one date mark to the next. For the obverse side of 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles, the coins showcase the Statue of Liberty design from John Mercanti for date marks from 1997 to 2017. As of 2018, new images of Liberty feature on the obverse with each date mark.
As for the reverse, 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagles have used new designs in each release from 1997 to 2016. Many of these contained images of the American bald eagle, but the 2015-2016 Torches of Liberty coins offered images of Lady Liberty on the reverse.
