The Gold American Buffalo coin was the first gold bullion coin from the United States Mint to feature .9999 fine gold content. The purest coin prior to the issue of the Gold Buffalo contained 22-karat gold. Even modern bullion coins like the Gold American Eagle don’t feature .9999 fine gold content. Right now, 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalo Coins are available to purchase online at Silver.com.

Proof Gold American Buffalo Coins are only available in 1 oz gold, with the exception of 2008 when the US Mint launched three fractional weights in the form of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. The onset of the Great Recession and crushing demand for silver and gold bullion resulted in those coins being shelved after 2008 and never returning.

On the obverse of 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalo Coins features the right-profile portrait of a tribal leader. This iconic design was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser and featured on the Buffalo Nickel from 1913 to 1938.

The reverse side of Proof Gold American Buffalo Coins includes the left-profile view of an American bison. Better known as a buffalo, the species was valuable to tribes from the American Plains in providing a source of food, shelter from hides, and even clothing from fur.

All Gold American Buffalo coins are struck by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility. The West Point Mint engraves a “W” mint mark on the obverse of these 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalo coins.
