Over the course of 8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 35 seconds, the men of Apollo 11 went from mere mortals to revered figures who had just rewritten human history by becoming the first human beings to ever land on the surface of another celestial body in our solar system. The mission launched on July 16, 1969, and included a three-man crew.
The Crew Silver Round in the Apollo 11 Series features the likeness of each of the three men who flew into space on the Apollo 11 program. Neil Armstrong served as Mission Commander for the flight, while Buzz Aldrin piloted the Lunar Module and Michael Collins piloted the Command Module. The crew may have featured three men, but only two of the three had the pleasure of walking on the Moon.
On the obverse of 1 oz Silver Apollo 11 The Crew Rounds is the left-profile likeness of each of the three men in the Apollo 11 crew. The name “Michael Collins,” “Neil Armstrong,” and “Buzz Aldrin” are all engraved along the design edge of the rounds. Included in the design is the moon’s surface with a footprint of an astronaut on the surface of the moment.
The reverse side of 1 oz Apollo 11 The Crew Rounds features a common design used on all eight releases in the Apollo 11 Series. This is based on the mission patch used by the crew in this program and features an American bald eagle landing on the surface of the moon with an olive branch in its talons.
These 1 oz Silver Apollo 11 The Crew Rounds ship inside of air-tite capsules and feature unique serial numbers on the edge. The North American Mint issues these rounds as the fourth in a series of eight depicting the major moments in the Apollo 11 flight.
