The 2016 release of the Silver Australian Kangaroo established a series that was previously issued by the mint as a proof coin. The new Silver Australian Kangaroo bucked tradition in silver collections by using the same design on the reverse of a leaping kangaroo each year. Another major first was the use of .9999 fine silver content in an annual-release bullion coin. In 2018, other collections from Perth would take up this position as well.

This series debuted with the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of the Queen created in 1998 and showcasing Her Majesty with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. In 2018, the coins shifted to use the new Jody Clark design of the Queen at age 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
A kangaroo is shown in the same design on the reverse of all 1 oz Silver Australian Kangaroo Coins. The depiction comes with a kangaroo in left-profile relief hopping across the Outback and is based on a 1930s copper penny design.
