In the American West, there were three types of lawmen popularized in TV, film, and in real life. Many of the terms to describe them were interchangeably used, and not correctly. Town marshals were elected by locals, while US Marshals were appointed by the federal government and had jurisdiction across the country. Sheriffs were elected by the people of the county and could cross from town to town in pursuit of the criminals threatening the peace and safety of settlers.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Proof Silver American Western Skulls Collection Old Sheriff Round is the image of a skeletal sheriff. He wears a tall cowboy hat that features a sheriff’s badge issued by Tombstone in the Arizona Territory. There are two repeating rifles in a crossed pattern below his chin, giving the overall design an appearance similar to the pirate Jolly Roger.
The reverse of the Proof Silver American Western Skulls Collection rounds includes the image known as the fried eagle. A distinct take on the heraldic eagle of the United States, behind the nation’s heraldic shield you won’t find the bald eagle. Instead, you’ll find the skeletal remains, free of feathers, of an eagle.
All of the 1 oz Proof Silver American Western Skulls Collection rounds are shipped in protective capsules with a Certificate of Authenticity. This COA includes the unique serial number you’ll also find engraved on the edge of each individual round from Osborne Mint.
