Human history is full of stories about monsters that indiscriminately took human lives. One of the most fearsome creatures was the Kraken, a mysterious beast that lived in the depths of the ocean and would attack ships and sailors at will. The image of the Kraken is captured perfectly on the 1 oz Silver Proof-like Kraken Round, available right now on Silver.com.

In pirate lore, the Kraken was a monstrous cephlapod that lurked in the depths of the oceans, waiting to pull unsuspecting ships and sailors to their doom in Davey Jones’ locker. Although the Kraken is often associated with pirate lore from the Caribbean, its roots are much deeper in human society.
Vikings trolling the seas of the North Atlantic between Norway and Greenland first recorded tales of the Kraken in the 13th century. By the 18th century, the Kraken had even been given legitimate status as a member of the cephlapod family of species.
Julie Lindquist created the design on the obverse of these silver rounds for Anonymous Mint. Her simple depiction shows what every ancient sailor feared. The Kraken can be seen emerging from the depths and capturing a Viking longboat, and sailors are visible falling from the ship into the ocean as it is split in half by the beast.
The reverse side of the round shows the official symbol of the Anonymous Mint. Its unique take on the American heraldic eagle features an owl in the center, with arrows in its talons and 13 stars arranged above its head. The rounds weight, purity, and metal content are included on this face of the round.
Anonymous Mint created these 1 oz Silver Proof-like Kraken Rounds with the help of Julie Lindquist, and struck and distributed the rounds in connection with the North American Mint. Both facilities are private mints in the United States.
