The concept of a sleigh ride during the winter season was actually popularized in the holiday song “Jingle Bells.” Composed in 1850, but not published until 1857, by James Lord Pierpont, it is one of the most well-known American songs in the world. The song’s original title was actually “One Horse Open Sleigh,” and it was intended for use as a Thanksgiving song.
This iconic American holiday song talks of the wonder of the winter season as viewed during a leisurely ride on a sleigh. The song sets a wonderful scene of winter as one rides in an open sleigh across a beautiful landscape kissed by the snow. The song became associated with Christmas and the holiday season in general shortly after it was published. It was performed on Washington Street in Boston in 1857 and immediately took off as a Christmas song.
The obverse of the silver round is one of the more intricate in SilverTowne’s 2017 Christmas collection. A meandering creek flanked by snowy banks on each side gives way to a background of barren trees and fir trees on a snow-covered landscape. A humble wooden bridge crosses the creek, upon which a horse-drawn sleigh makes its way through the winter landscape.
