Stovepipe Sterling is one of the many soldier figurines depicted in the Silver Soldiers Statue collection that now appears in the Soldier Bullion collection of rounds. The stovepipe refers to Sterling’s M1 Bazooka. The Bazooka, a generic term for any portable, recoilless, anti-tank rocket launcher, was developed by the United States Army in 1942. The weapon saw wide use with American forces during World War II, but upgraded variants remained production for decades to come. The weapon saw use with American forces in the Korean War and Vietnam War, as well as with other allied forces in conflicts such as the Yom Kippur War and the Falklands War.

The use of the term stovepipe in his name comes from the resemblance of the firing tube on the M1 to a stovepipe. The M1 helped foot soldiers level the playing field in the face of mechanized armor on the battlefield. The solid-propellant rocket enabled American soldiers to fire HEAT rounds, or high-explosive anti-tank rounds.
