Since 1967, the South African Mint and Rand Refinery have issued the Krugerrand bullion coins for the Republic of South Africa. However, for the first 50 years of that history, only gold bullion coins were available in the design collection. Starting in 2017, silver coins were available in the collection as a new first for the Krugerrand Series. Right now, 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrands are available to purchase online at Silver.com.

The obverse side of the 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand features a left-profile bust of Paul Kruger. Known in his day as Oom Paul, Afrikaan for “Uncle Paul,” Kruger was an influential Boer figure who led a predecessor South African Republic as part of a triumvirate and was later elected president of that republic.

On the reverse side of Silver South African Krugerrands is the Springbok antelope. The unique antelope species calls the southern ranges of the African continent home and is populous throughout the modern borders of the Republic of South Africa.

Silver South African Krugerrands were introduced in 2017 as the South African Mint and Rand Refinery celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand. The new 1 oz silver coins were first available in 2017 as a Premium Uncirculated specimen, and have since been issued on an annual basis in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
