The term Jack-o-Lantern is applied to carved pumpkins colloquially, but historically it applies to any carved turnip or other root vegetable used as a lantern in association with Halloween. The term dates back to English folklore of the 1660s referring to a visual phenomenon identified as a foolish fire. That original term was will-o-the-wisp. The use of a personification was transferred to the carved pumpkin from this folklore tale.

A wisp was known as a bundle of sticks that would be lit on fire as a torch. Jack-o-Lantern originated in the same manner as a carved out pumpkin with a candle lighting the inside. The practice of carving out vegetables can be traced as far back as 10,000 years when some of the first farming cultures would carve out gourds. The practice of carving out gourds and pumpkins at Halloween is traced to 19th century Ireland where grotesque faces were carved into pumpkins as part of the festival celebration.

On the obverse of the 1 oz SilverTowne Happy Halloween Pumpkin Silver Rounds is a depiction of a smiling carved pumpkin. While grotesque imagery is often a part of pumpkin carving, many prefer to carve a simple smiling pumpkin to put trick-or-treaters at ease on a dark night. Even with a smile, the haunting glow from within a pumpkin can make it look eerie whether that was the intention or not.

The reverse side of 1 oz SilverTowne Happy Halloween Pumpkin Silver Rounds includes a blank field. The field is left blank on the reverse of the rounds by SilverTowne on purpose to accommodate custom engraving for those who wish to have that done at the mint. The silver rounds are available here with the blank field.

These 1 oz SilverTowne Happy Halloween Pumpkin Rounds are available with individual flips, acrylic tubes of 20 rounds, or boxes of 500 rounds. Each one is in brand-new condition from the mint.
