Among the rarest coins in American history are those gold coins struck before 1933. The federal government collected all of the nation’s circulation gold coins starting in 1933 to melt down into gold bars. The effort was meant to bolster national reserves in the Great Depression, and had the lasting effect of creating demand for gold coins that survived the collection drive. Today, the $10 Gold Indian Eagle is available from Silver.com.

The $10 Gold Indian Eagle coin was struck between 1907 and 1933, replacing the Liberty Eagle coin of the same precious metal content and face value. This design was popular for its beauty, and as a circulation coin was popular for its convenient size and denomination. Each $10 Gold Indian Eagle was designed by America’s greatest coin designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
On the obverse side of the coin is an image of Lady Liberty wearing the so-called “war bonnet.” The crown of feathers is similar to the Native American headdress featured on other American coins of the era, but the left-profile figure has the softer features of Lady Liberty. Engravings around her image include 13 stars for the original colonies and the year of minting.
The reverse side of the coin bears a majestic interpretation of the bald eagle. In Saint-Gaudens’ design, the eagle is perched atop a quiver full of arrows, which is wrapped in an olive branch. The image is symbolic of the nation’s level of preparedness for war, but its desire for lasting peace.
All of the $10 Gold Indian Eagles in this listing are in Almost Uncirculated condition. A coin in AU condition shows only slight signs of wear, and is often graded between 50 and 58 on the Sheldon numeric scale.
The United States Mint produced these coins at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mint facilities. If you have any questions, a Silver.com associate is eager to help you out.
