Following a five-year hiatus in silver dollar coining in the United States, the silver dollar returned in 1878 with George T. Morgan’s design of Liberty on the obverse. The story of Morgan’s design starts “across the pond” two years earlier. At the young age of 30, Morgan was a respected designer in Britain, but the Royal Mint had no openings available for him.
He came to the United States on a six-month trial period, and had risen to a position as Assistant Engraver at the US Mint by 1877 when he sat with Anna Willis Williams to create a depiction of Liberty for use on the new silver dollar from the Mint.
On the obverse side of the 10 oz Great American Mint Silver Morgan Dollar Bar is an image of the Morgan Silver Dollar. Inset into the surface of the bar is the obverse design from the iconic coin, which features Lady Liberty in a left-profile portrait. Engravings on the coin include “E Pluribus Unum” and 13 stars around her head.
Additional engravings on this side of the bar include its weight, purity, and metal content, as well as a stamp of “Made in U.S.A.” The reverse side of the bar features a pair of repeating images, one of which includes the simple phrase “Ten Troy Ounces .999 Fine Silver.”
This bar is a brand-new product from Great American Mint, which already produces Morgan Silver Rounds and a 1 oz Morgan Silver Dollar Bar. Based in Anaheim, California, the mint is a well-known producer of blanks used by sovereign mints around the globe.
