Goldbacks are a privately issued form of voluntary local currency produced using a thin layer of 24-karat gold placed between durable sheets of polyester film. Each note displays intricate artwork and contains a specific fractional amount of real gold. This design makes Goldbacks one of the few modern currency concepts that include gold intended for use in spending. The series began in Utah and has since expanded into several other states, bringing together the historic value of gold with a practical format designed for daily transactions. The Idaho Goldback is the newest state release and adds another denomination while continuing the series’ use of state-themed imagery. Currently, 100 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available online from Silver.com.

The design of the 100 Idaho Goldback Gold Note features Libertas walking forward toward the viewer with a shovel in her hand. She appears in a field with the powerful Shoshone Falls in the distance. Shoshone Falls is located along the Snake River near the city of Twin Falls in Idaho’s Magic Valley. The waterfall drops approximately 212 feet, making it nearly 50 feet taller than Niagara Falls. At its widest point, the falls stretch close to 1,000 feet across. The formation of the falls dates back about 14,500 years when the massive Bonneville Flood carved through layers of basalt lava flows. Long before modern development, the falls were recognized as an important natural landmark and sacred place by Indigenous peoples of the region, including the Shoshone-Bannock tribes.
Libertas, the Roman goddess who personifies liberty, has remained a lasting symbol of freedom throughout Western history. In ancient Rome, Libertas represented the rights and responsibilities tied to citizenship. Her figure appeared on Roman coins and public monuments as a reminder of the value of liberty within society. Over the centuries, the allegorical image of Libertas continued to influence political symbolism and public art, ultimately inspiring the iconic Statue of Liberty that stands in New York Harbor today.
