In this listing, we’re offering one of the very first of these notes in a $5 denomination featuring both Alexander Hamilton and the Statue of Freedom. Today, 1862 $5 Legal Tender Notes in Very Good condition are available to you online at Silver.com.

Note Highlights:

  • Ships in a protective currency sleeve from PMG!
  • Iconic Civil War currency!
  • Historic large format note!
  • Issued a face value of $5 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Graded Very Good 10 by the Paper Money Guaranty.
  • Alexander Hamilton and the Statue of Freedom are located on the obverse.
  • Denomination and obligation details are featured in the reverse design.

These $5 Legal Tender Notes have been officially certified by the Paper Money Guaranty. PMG was founded in 2005 and is considered the world’s largest third-party paper money grading service. These notes were awarded a grade of Very Good 10. As such, various flaws and signs of circulation could be present. The texture will also be somewhat limp. The notes are delivered in protective currency sleeves with a label featuring the official grading information.

The $5 notes in this listing are among the first legal tender notes printed. Originally issued by the Treasury to help resolve the Union’s Civil War debts, these notes became widely circulated and were printed all the way up until 1971. As such, legal tender notes (a.k.a. United States notes) represent the longest-running currency program in US history.

Alexander Hamilton and the Statue of Freedom are found on the obverse of 1862 Legal Tender Notes. Hamilton is shown in a portrait looking towards the left on the right side of the note. Opposite Hamilton is the Statue of Freedom. This allegorical figure is depicted as a woman holding a shield and sword with a military helmet adorning her head. In the center of the note, there is text reading The United States Promises to Pay the Bearer Five Dollars.

Denomination and obligation details are located on the reverse of these Legal Tender Notes. The obligation language describes the notes as legal tender and prohibits them from being used for duties on imports and to pay interest on the public debt. The denomination is featured on the left and right side of the obligation language both alphabetically and with Roman numerals. These details are set against a beautiful triptych decorative backdrop in green.

We also never have access to your credit/debit card details, as they are securely communicated directly to the payment processor (Authorize.net) and never retained by Silver.com. For this reason, we also don't process credit/debit card orders over the phone, as it is the least secure way to process those transactions.

In addition, all VISA and MasterCard orders undergo an additional step of user authentication - the respective Verified by VISA or MasterCard SecureCode programs. Upon completing checkout with a VISA or MasterCard credit/debit card, you may be promoted for additional details to confirm your identity and protect our customers against credit card fraud.

Do you charge sales tax?

We are required to collect sales tax in certain states. You can review your states sales tax policy here: https://www.silver.com/taxes. You should always consult with a tax adviser for specific advice in your area.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
