If you have an interest in Civil War history, then the original legal tender notes might be of interest to you. Sometimes referred to as United States notes and “greenbacks,” this currency was originally printed by the Treasury to alleviate the Union’s debt during the war. Featuring beautiful designs in the large format style, these notes make for great display pieces and conversation starters. Today, 1863 $5 Legal Tender Notes are available to you online at Silver.com in Very Good condition.

Note Highlights:

  • Delivered in a protective currency sleeve from PMG!
  • Original Civil War currency!
  • Iconic large format note!
  • Issued a face value of $5 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Graded Very Good 8 by the Paper Money Guaranty.
  • Alexander Hamilton and the Statue of Freedom appear on the obverse.
  • Denomination and obligation information is shown in the reverse design.

Each $5 Legal Tender Note in this listing online will arrive in certified Very Good 8 condition. This grade indicates that while the note is intact, it will display clear signs of circulation. Upon inspection, you may find soiling, minor stains, and splits. These notes have been officially graded by the Paper Money Guaranty. Included with the note is an archival-quality currency sleeve with a label featuring the official grade.

On the obverse of 1863 Legal Tender Notes, you will see a rendering of the Statue of Victory along with a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. The Statue of Victory design is based on the famous sculpture that sits atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol building. Other details include a variety of ornate text as well as the Treasury seal in red ink.

The reverse of 1863 $5 Notes contains obligation language and denomination details. There are also exquisite decorative patterns occupying the background. The corners are left blank, with the denomination appearing on the right and left sides of the field.

Collectors of legal tender notes will find this currency in the classic large format as well as the modern small size. The larger notes were issued from Series 1862 through Series 1923 before being replaced by the modified size. The final series of legal tender notes was 1966, though the program, in general, was issued until 1971. And at 109 years, legal tender notes are the longest-running paper currency program in United States history. However, that record is set to be surpassed by the Federal Reserve note in 2024.

We also never have access to your credit/debit card details, as they are securely communicated directly to the payment processor (Authorize.net) and never retained by Silver.com. For this reason, we also don't process credit/debit card orders over the phone, as it is the least secure way to process those transactions.

In addition, all VISA and MasterCard orders undergo an additional step of user authentication - the respective Verified by VISA or MasterCard SecureCode programs. Upon completing checkout with a VISA or MasterCard credit/debit card, you may be promoted for additional details to confirm your identity and protect our customers against credit card fraud.

Do you charge sales tax?

We are required to collect sales tax in certain states. You can review your states sales tax policy here: https://www.silver.com/taxes. You should always consult with a tax adviser for specific advice in your area.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
