The United States Mint was forced to cease the production of silver dollars in 1873 as a result of the Coinage Act of 1873, a measure that ended the free coining of silver in the United States. When the coining of silver dollars resumed in 1878, a new design was chosen and new mints became involved in the production of the coins. The lowest minted coins in the Silver Morgan Dollar Series were those issued by the Carson City Mint from 1878-1885 and 1889-1893. Right now, 1878-CC Silver Morgan Dollars are available to purchase online at Silver.com with GSA holders.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships to you inside the original hard plastic from the GSA!
  • First year of availability for the Silver Morgan Dollar!
  • Roughly 61,000 of these 1878-CC dollars were released from Treasury vaults in the 1960s!
  • Consists of .77344 Troy ounces of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • The obverse depicts Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse is the heraldic eagle.
  • Comes with a “CC” mint mark from the Carson City Mint.

Each 1878-CC Silver Morgan Dollars available here comes with the original hard plastic packaging from the Government Services Administration. When the US Treasury discovered millions of Carson City-issued Silver Morgans in its vaults in the 1960s, the GSA packaged the coins and later dispersed them to the public through auctions. The hard plastic case holds the coin and has a blue card in the background.

1878 was the first year of issue for the Silver Morgan Dollar. The Carson City Mint issued the lowest number of Silver Morgan Dollars in 1878. While the Philadelphia Mint issued nearly 10.5 million coins and the San Francisco Mint an additional 9.774 million coins, the Carson City Mint issued just over 2.2 million coins. This marks the second-highest mintage from Carson City behind only the 1890 release. However, when the GSA took an account of all the Silver Morgan Dollars discovered in the Treasury vaults in the 1960s, it found only 61,000 of these 1878-CC coins in total.

The obverse side of 1878-CC Silver Morgan Dollars features a left-profile portrait of Liberty. This bust of Liberty depicts her wearing a coronet and wreath crown in her hair with a ring of 13 stars around her head.

On the reverse field of 1878-CC Morgan Dollars is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. George T. Morgan created both the Liberty bust on the obverse and this heraldic eagle for the reverse. This face of the coin includes a small “CC” mint mark beneath the tail feathers of the eagle above the “D” in the words “One Dollar.”

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
