Prior to 1964, owners of silver certificates could redeem their notes for genuine silver dollars. But today they are merely considered legal tender, similar to a Federal Reserve note. Yet for fans of historic paper currency, they are unique collectibles with significant numismatic value. Of particular interest are large format of the certificates issued prior to 1928. Now, 1891 $2 Silver Certificate Notes in Good condition are available to you for purchase online at Silver.com.

Note Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic currency sleeve from PCGS!
  • Vintage large format note!
  • Second series in the $2 silver certificates!
  • Bears a face value of $2 (USD) from the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Good 4 by PCGS.
  • The obverse features a portrait of William Windom.
  • On the reverse, there is various denomination and obligation information.

When you purchase 1891 Silver Certificate Notes, they will arrive in clear plastic currency sleeves. These sleeves are of archival quality and include a label bearing the official grade from PCGS. Founded in 1986, PCGS is one of the leading third-party grading companies for coins and paper currency. As Good 4-level notes, these will appear heavily circulated with a variety of flaws. It is also possible to find small pieces missing from the notes.

The large format $2 silver certificate debuted in 1886 and featured Winfield Scott Hancock. One of the most memorable $2 designs arrived in 1896 and depicted an allegory of science vignette that is considered part of the Educational Series. The final $2 silver certificate was issued in 1899 with George Washington on the front. While silver certificates would continue following the 1928 paper currency re-design, they were only issued in denominations of $1, $5, and $10.

A portrait of William Windom is featured on the obverse of 1891 $2 Certificate Notes. Windom famously served as Secretary of the Treasury under Benjamin Harrison, Chester Arthur, and James Garfield. He also served in the Senate and the House of Representatives. While most paper currency features a former president, it was common in the 19th century for treasury secretaries to grace the front instead. The obverse also contains the Treasury seal in red ink and the serial number in blue.

Obligation and denomination information is located on the reverse of 1891 $2 Silver Certificates. The obligation language is positioned in the center, while the denomination is featured at several points across the design. The reverse also includes three beautiful decorative patterns across the background. Meanwhile, the edges are left blank.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
